It’s one of those things, you think, what..

“It’ll never happen to me.”

So, if you can put the pieces together, and are familiar with foreshadowing.

Easter Sunday morning, I was playing bass and we just finished sound check.

I just finished memorizing my music, my brain hurt quite a bit.

And I got a phone call.

It was Amanda.

Now, why do we react the way we react?

Why do we react that way?

“Well, I mean, nobody likes getting money stolen.”

Right, but why don’t they?

“Well, because I’ve earned it!”

Yeah, but so what? You can just earn more….

“Yeah, but I like having money…”

I love money.

At some level, we have to be honest, how much do we love money.

Now don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t on the phone with my wife saying,

“Oh, don’t worry about it, it’s just a few hundred bucks, I didn’t even have any plans for that money any way!”

I worked HARD for that money, seriously!

And this morning, when we dive back into the book of Matthew, Jesus is still delivering the Sermon on the mount.

MATERIALISM- A tendency to consider material possessions and physical comfort as more important than spiritual values.

Matthew 6:19-21 Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.

Is your treasure in kingdom things or worldly things?

Matthew 6:22-23 Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light. But when your eye is unhealthy, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!

Matthew 6:24 No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.

God grants it: Blessing

Use our strength: Costly

Jesus merges Spiritual and Material

Luke 12:15 Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.

It’s not wrong for us to possess things, but it is wrong for things to possess us.

  • Mark 7:21-23 For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, price, and foolishness. All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you.

MATTHEW 6:25-34

Materialism leads to worry

All of Nature depends on God, and God never fails.

Only mortal man depends on money, and money always fails.

We are pulled away from God, because we try to live life depending on ourselves.

How do we stop depending on ourselves?

Matthew 6:33 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

What convinced you that you didn’t have to worry about money?

I think that I used to worry about money and I think that I just watched God provide for our needs one time at a time I mean he would provide for a need here and then next time I would still worry about the money and he would provide for that need and he would continue to do so until I said, ‘Ok, I’m not gonna do this anymore.’
